Stephen enlisted at Kalamazoo, Michigan, for 1 year of service on September 5, 1864, at the age of 33. He took the Muster Oath on September 6, 1864. He served the rest of the war in that capacity and was discharged at Camden, Arkansas, on August 8, 1865.
