A Dartmouth graduate from Redford, Michigan, he enlisted at Detroit during the organization of the Regiment for 3 years of service at the age of 34. He was commissioned on August 15, 1862, and served as 1st Assistant Surgeon until he resigned from the Regiment and was honorably discharged on February 14, 1863.
