From Port Huron, Michigan, Edgar enlisted as a 1st Sergeant on August 12, 1861, at Port Huron for three years service at the age of 19. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on December 15, 1862. He was wounded in action and taken prisoner at Chickamauga, Georgia, on September 20, 1863, and paroled on March 1, 1865. He returned to active duty with the regiment on May 9, 1865. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant of Company K on June 7, 1865. He mustered out of the service on Nashville, Tennessee, on June 26, 1865.
