From Jackson, Michigan, Alva "Dode" enlisted September 18, 1861, for 3 years of service at the age of 19. He took the muster oath on October 20, 1861. Taken prisoner at Lavernge, Tennessee, on January 1, 1863. He was discharged with the rank of Corporal at Atlanta, Georgia, on October 31, 1864. He participated in the battles of Perryville, Tennessee, and Lavernge, Tennessee. His postwar address was N. Blackstone St. in Jackson, Michigan. He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery just South of Jackson, Michigan. His brother Putnam of the 10th Infantry is the man on his right.

The reunion photo was taken on Balance Rock on the top of Lookout Mountain at Chattanooga, Tennessee.
