The quartermaster-general reports the number of graves under his supervision as 315,555, only 72,400 of which have been identified. The remainder, 143,155, lie in graves marked unknown.

Number of troops captured during the war: United States 212,608 Confederate, 476,169

Number of troops paroled on the field: United States 16,431 Confederate, 248,599

Number of troops who died in captivity: United States 29,725 Confederate, 26,774
