Egbert S. Conklin was a native of Orange County, NY. He was born 14 October 1832 to Smith and Susan (Phillips) Conklin. He settled in Montcalm County in April of 1867. On 11 August 1867 he married Mary A. Worden in Walker, Kent County, MI. She was born 29 Feb 1842 to Pardon B. and Elizabeth (Wood) Worden in Huron County, OH.

They had these children: Eudora May (1868-1932) wife of R. Valentine Drake; Myrtle A.(?-1904) wife of Dr. James Curtis Twitchell; Vernah E. (1871-1936) wife of Wendell Phillips; Nellie C.(1873-1958) wife of Frank A. Miller; Ernest Egbert (1874-1924) husband of Alberta A.; Kit Carson (1879-1936) husband of Lenore; Mabelle (born abt 1881) wife of George H. Williams; Cecile Mary (1882-1965) wife of Guy Weeks; Don C.(born abt 1884) husband of Marie J. Wilson; and Roscoe D. (1886-1943) husband of Ada Josephine Sanborn.

Mary Conklin died of apoplexy, 4 Oct 1919, and is buried in Vickeryville Cemetery, Montcalm County, MI.

Service Egbert Conklin was 28 years old when he enlisted from Grand Rapids, MI on 13 Sep 1862 for three years. He began as a private in Company B, 6th Michigan Cavalry, Custer's Brigade, Kilpatrick's Division. He mustered in 11 Oct 1862, became First Sergeant 30, Sep 1963. He was wounded in action at Trevillian Station, VA, 11 Jun 1863. He received a gunshot wound in his left leg and remained in hospitals in Washington, D. C. and Philadelphia, PA until 8 Dec 1863. He was given a 60 day furlough. Then he was detailed as trainmaster for Kilpatrick's Division about 15 months; in Q. M. Gen. Connor's expedition in 1865. Mustered out at Fort Leavenworth, KS, 24 Nov 1865. He was honorably discharged in Jackson, MI, 5 Dec 1865. He fought at Gettysburg, Battle Mountain, Monterey, Rappahannock, Rapidan, Culpepper C. H., Mine Run, Kellar's Ford, Raccoon Ford, Martin's Ford, Hay Market, Buckton's Mills and Broad Run. Mr. Conklin commanded his company about 15 months, while Orderly Sergeant, all of the officers being wounded and in hospital, and he repeatedly refused a commision offered him outside of his company. He was pensioned.
