Joel B. Mills was a native of Jackson, MI, born 28 Nov 1834. He was the son of Major D. and Lucina (Strickland) Mills. Joel married Mary Ann Stanbridge 29 Dec 1858 in Ionia County, MI. She was born in England 2 May 1841, the daughter of George and Mary (Field) Stanbridge. Her family immigrated in 1854. Joel and Mary settled in Montcalm County in the spring of 1860.

They had six children: Lucy Jane (1860-1915) wife of DeVilla Adelbert Newcomb; William H. (1861-1921) husband of Mary McNitt; Rosa; Ida Abill (1867-1887) wife to Edwin Jasper Johnson; Arthur E. (1868-1896) husband to Martha A. Bennett; and Nellie S. (1886-1886).

Lucy died 28 Oct 1902 of apoplexy.

On 12 Nov 1903 (marriage book C, p. 330), Joel married Lidian (Bice) Mitchell in Grand Rapids, Kent County, MI. Each had been married once before their union. After Joel's death she married Michael McToner and Zenoah B. Woody. Lydia died in Delhi, Ingham County, MI and is buried with her first husband William H. Mitchell in Oakhill Cemetery, Grand Rapids, Kent County, MI.

Mr. Mills was a farmer in Bushnell Township, Montcalm County, MI.

Service At the age of 27 he enlisted as a private in Company E, 3rd Michigan Volunteer Infantry, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, 4th A. C. In December 1864 he was sent to the hospital at Murfreesboro, remaining two months, and at Nashville, TN, six weeks with typhoid fever; from July to September 1865, he was at New Orleans and St. Louis with chronic diarrhea. He received an honorable discharge in St. Louis, 16 Sep 1865. He fought at Nashville and Murfreesboro. He was pensioned.

Siblings Three brothers were also in the service: William H., in the 9th Michigan Volunteer Infantry; Alson M., 16 Michigan Volunteer Infantry; and George W. in 3rd Michigan Volunteer Infantry. His father, after sending four sons and two sons-in-law into the service, served himself as a nurse in the hospital at Philadelphia for six months; he was the first owner of the land upon which the city of Jackson, Michigan was built.
