John Arnold was a native of Maine, born 20 April 1835 to Ira and Mary (Grant) Arnold. John's first marriage was to Hannah Garver 9 Dec 1855 in Eaton County, MI. She was born in Ohio in 1836. They had three children: Joseph P.(1856-1938) husband of Lydia Ann Ostrander and Mercy D. Cackett; Jay (1859-1928) husband to Mary Annis Soughders; and Mary (1864-). Hannah died 15 Sep 1879 and is buried in East Sebewa Cemetery, Ionia County, MI.

He married Melissa Jane (Myers) Belcher in Portland, Ionia County, MI, 8 Apr 1883. She was the daughter of Martin and Edna J. (Eddy) Myres. Melissa was born in 1849. They settled in Montcalm County in the spring of 1891. Melissa died in 1926 and is buried in Vinewood Cemetery, Edmore, MI. She had a son, Frank Belcher, born in 1890.

To this union four children were born: Lola/Faith/Lewella/Lonie A./Louise A.(1885-1908) wife of Ray Hardy; George T. (1884-); Stephen D. (1887-1939) husband to Lola Belle Valentine; and Minnie B.(1890-1932) wife of Archie Beers and Wayne Sanders.

John Arnold was a farmer.

John died in Edmore, Montcalm County, MI, 17 Dec 1905.

Service John Arnold enlisted at the age of 28 in Lansing, MI, as a private in Company K, 7th Michigan Cavalry, 3d Brigade, 2nd Division, Sheridan's Cavalry Corps, 14 Feb 1863. On 17 Mar 1863 he was transferred to Company G, 7th Michigan Cavalry. He fought at Gettysburg, Richmond, Kilpatrick's Raid and was wounded at Opequan, by his horse falling on him. This resulted in a permanent injury from which he finally lost his leg by amputation, 19 Dec 1888. He was sent to the convalescent hospital in Virginia, in June, and was discharged from service, 14 Aug 1863 at Washington D. C..

Siblings A brother Perry Arnold went out in the First Michigan Volunteer Infantry. Mrs. Arnold's father served in the 14th Michigan Voluteer Infantry and was killed by a sharpshooter at Atlanta. Her borther, George Myres, went out in the 20th Michigan Volunteer Infantry.
