Nathaniel Brown was born 14 Sep 1824 in Harefield, Middlesex County, England. His parents were William and Sarah (Ford) Brown. He was married there 16 Nov 1844 to Emma Milton. She was also born there 1 Nov 1820. He parents were William and Elizabeth (Webb) Milton. Nathaniel Brown immigrated to the United States in 1852 and was naturalized. He settled in Montcalm County in the winter of 1853.

Nathaniel and Emma had the following children: Nathaniel James born England (1850-1923) husband of Luly Stover and Rosa Lent; Milton Joseph., born NY (1852-1942) husband of Nettie Rebotham and Emily; Mary Jane (1855-1917) wife of Theodore Leach; Anna Georgia (1858-1951) wife of Cyrus G. Tindall; Leonard Thomas (1860-1950) husband of Lottie Ernest; and Emma W. (1866-1943) wife of Ulyses Jay Palmer.

At the time of their marriage he was a baker and she was a spinster, at age 26.

Emma Brown died 28 Jan 1899 in Fairplain Township, Montcalm County, MI and is buried in Clear Lake Cemetery.

Service Nathaniel entered the service as a private in Company F, 21st MI Volunteer Infantry, 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 14th A. C. He enlisted 31 Dec 1863 from Grand Rapids, Kent County, MI, although he was a resident of Montcalm County at the time. On 8 Jun 1865 he was transferred in Washington, D. C. to Company C, 14th MI Volunteer Infantry. He participated in the battles of Bentonville, Savannah and in Sherman's March to the Sea. He was given an honorable discharge on the 18th of July in 1865 or 1866 in Louisville, KY.
