Nathan VanHoosen was born in Ontario, Canada, 13 Apr 1836, to Joshua and Malinda VanHoosen. Malinda died when Nathan was young. The family immigrated in 1837, according to the 1900 census. Around 1847, Joshua came to Montcalm County with Nathan and three of his sisters. Somewhere along the way the name was shortened to VanHoose.

Nathan married Rose Zeigenfuss 8 Jan 1866. She was born in New York 19 November 1845. She died in Greenville in 1931 and is buried in Forest Home Cemetery.

They had these children: Nellie (1867-1950) wife of Frank Beardslee; Elma L. (1869-1950) wife of Frank Fletcher; Ottie B. (1871-1895) wife of William C. Wilson; Grace May (1873-1936) wife of Harland Terry; Alette/Lettie (1875-1943) wife of George H. Weed; Charlie (1877-1943) husband to Maggie Wilson; and Harley (1879-1927) who married to Laura Wilson.

Service At the time of his enlistment Nathan lived in Oakland County. Nathan enlisted as a private in Company B, 10th Regiment, Michigan Volunteer Infantry on 6 Jan 1862 in Flint. He was promoted to Corporal. He was discharged 26 Feb 1865, having served 3 years, 1 month and 20 days. He was pensioned.

IN MEMORY. Nathan Van Hoose was born in Westminster, Canada, April 13, 1836. His mother died when he was only 8 years old, therefore he had to take care of himself at an early age. He served three years and nine months in the Civil war, being honorably discharged on Feb. 5, 1865. He was married to Rose Ziegenfus Jan. 8, 1866. Seven children were born to this union. "Nate," as he was generally called by everyone, was a friend to all, a kind and loving husband and father. He died on Jan. 12, 1918, at the home where he has lived for 48 years, aged 81 years 9 months. He was in feeble health for about eight years, but at the end his passing was peaceful and quiet, without suffering. He leaves, besides his wife and six children, two sisters, fifteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.
