Roswell Fleck was born 15 Apr 1845, at Camden, Hillsdale County, MI. He was the son of John and Priscilla (Swager) Fleck. He came to Montcalm County in 1859, and married there, 17 Dec 1865, Helen Celia Miel. She was born 20 Sep 1848 in Allegany County, NY, the daughter of Homer C. and Martha (Swift) Miel.

They had four children: Jarvis (1867-); Percy Clifton (1868-1933) husband to Amelia Noonan and Margaret Jane Earner; Oscar (1870-1918) husband of Edith Nevins; and Inez Belle (1873-1886).

Helen died 10 Feb 1914 in Belvidere Township, Montcalm County, MI. She is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Six Lakes, Montcalm County, MI.

Mr. Fleck was a farmer and township clerk.

Service Roswell Fleck enlisted for three years, from Greenville, 6 Aug 1862, at the age of 17. He was a private in Company F, 21st Michigan Volunteer Infantry, 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 14th A. C. In March of 1863 he was sent to hospital No. 3 in Nashville, TN, remaining there five months with typhoid fever and pneumonia. He was transferred in the summer of 1864, at Chattanooga, TN, to the Engineering Corps, remaining six months, then transferred back to 2nd Brigade, and was honorably discharged at Washington, D. C., 8 Jun 1865. He fought at Perrysville, Stone River, Chickamaugus, Averysville, Bentonville, and with Sherman on his March to the Sea. He was pensioned.

Siblings Two brothers were in the service: George, in Company F, 21st Michigan Volunteer Infantry; and Leonard who went out in 3rd Michigan Volunteer Infantry, who was wounded but survived. Mrs. Fleck's father served in the 8th Michigan Volunteer Infantry ans was killed at James Island in the spring of 1862.
