Samuel Rhoades was born in Stark County, Ohio on 16 Oct 1832. He was the son of Frederick and Anna (May) Thoades. On 7 Nov 1860 he married Mariah June Allen in Madison Township, Lawrence County, MI. She was born 16 May 1845 to Ambrose and Mary (Sherman) Allen in Madison Township. They settled in Montcalm County in March, 1873.

They had twelve children: Charles O. (1861-1948), husband to Emma Wrisley and Priscilla Lucille Dollarhide; William Samuel (1863-1941), husband to Ida Ann Phelan (divorced) and Elizabeth Ann Lascelle; Lewis Elvin (1867-1917), husband to Mable Viola Taft; Allen A. (1869-1870); Mary Louise (1872-1939) never married; Reuben Willis (1873-1957), husband to Alice Minnie Gavitt; Anna May (1876-1894), wife to Alberton A. Gavitt; infant girl (1887-1887); Melvin S. (1878-1878); Marvin Frederick (1878-1961), husband to Elsie Ann Cole, Iola Parker, Lena Belle Kelsey and Charlotte E. Lister; Edna Dell (1881-1974), wife to Alberton A. Gavitt; and Norman John (1883-1960), husband to Nora Irene Miller.

A divorce was granted June 5, 1899 to Samuel Rhoades and Mariah J. Rhoades in Montcalm County.

Mariah died 9 Dec 1943 of bronchitis. She is buried in Crystal Cemetery.

Samuel fell from a train near Carlin, Nevada and was killed 4 Jul 1906.

Service At the age of 31, in Detroit on 3 Sep 1864, Samuel enlisted as a prive in Company E, 4th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, 4th Brigade, 3d Division, 14th A. C. He fought at Murfreesboro and was given an honorable discharge at Detroit in June of 1866. He was pensioned.
