William H. McClelland was born in Mansfield, Richland County, Ohio, 30 May 1847 to Thomas and Elizabeth (Kunzman) McClelland. He came to Montcalm County in September of 1865. He married Martha Chaffee in Portland, MI on 10 Dec 1878. Martha was born 2 Nov 1851 in Cattaraugus County, NY to Harvey and Charlotte (Rathbone) Chaffee.

William and Martha had these children: Manley (1878-1879); June (1880-1913) wife of George Hart; Myrtle C. (1887-1888); Elinar J. (1889-1933) wife of Edward Emerson Hart; and Stanley (1890-1890).

Martha died 12 Jun 1922 and is buried in Hillside Cemetery, Entrican, MI.

William H. McClelland was Justice of the Peace of Douglass Townshp, and a farmer.

Service William was a young man of 17 years when he enlisted from Bloomfield, OH, 15 Sep 1863 as a private in Company A, 12th Ohio Cavalry, 22nd Brigade, 22nd Division. The company was detailed in the summer of 1864, as a bodyguard for General Berbridge. He fought at Lexington, Mt. Sterling, Kings Salt Works and Sulphur Springs. He was wounded at Marion, West Virginia, 16 Dec 1864, in the right leg, necessitating amputation above the knee. A Confederate surgeon amputated his leg. He was captured by Morgan's troops and held in the Confederate hospitals at Marion and Mongomery Springs, six months, until the surrender of Lee. His final discharge was given him at Washington, D. C., in September of 1865.
