Slawson, aged 97 years, 5 months and 12 days. Ellis Garbutt was born in Yarm, Yorkshire, England, in 1809, and at the aged of 21 was married to Joseph Bamlet. Shortly afterwards they sailed for Troy, N. Y., where they resided for a brief period, and in 1833 they joined the early settlers at Detroit, Mich. In 1843, Mr. Bamlet having died, she became the wife of Henry Berridge. BOWER, HELEN

Independent Daily News, Greenville, MI- Tuesday, December 21, 1926
Mrs. Helen Bower Passes Away Monday
Oldest Member of Pioneer Society Here Dies at 90 Years Of Age

The death here last night of Mrs. Helen Bower, 90 years of age, marked the passing of one of the oldest pioneers in Greenville and Montcalm county. Mrs. Bower passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nellie Munson, 303 West Grove street, after an illness of several weeks

Helen Miller was born on July 11, 1836, in Tompkins county, New York and it was there that she was married to Henry Bower, a brother of the late Dr. H. L. Bower and Dana Bower, of this city. The marriage took place on September 26, 1855.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bower and Mr. and Mrs. Dana Bower were all old schoolmates in New York state and the two families moved to this city soon after Dr. H. L. Bower came here as a peoneer physician.

The Bower family lived in Greenville for about a year after coming here, during which time Mr. Bower did some carpentering work. Mr. Bower was the constructor of the first sidewalk in the city of Greenville, building it in front of what is known as the McCreedy block where the Laura Bremer Millinery store is located at present. At that time a millinery store was conducted in the building by Mrs. McCreedy and mrs. Savage.

About fifty-nine years ago, Henry Bower purchased a farm two miles north of this city on waht is now M66, and here Mrs. Bower helped in clearing the land of the trees and huge forests and aided her husband materially in developing one of the finest farms in the county.

In the early years on the farm, Mrs. Bower learned well the hardships and privation of a pioneer, as the Bower family were one of first families to settle in this part of the state.

On the death of her husband in 1902, Mrs. Bower came to Greenville to live with her daughter, Mrs. Munson, who, together with another daughter, Mrs. M. J. Green, also of this city, survives her.

Mrs. Green's husband was a grandson of the founder of the city of Greenville, and so the family is closely linked with the history of the now flourishing city.

Mrs. Bower has for years been closely identified with the Baptist church and was one of the first members of the Greenville Pioneer society, altho not a charter member. She was the oldest member of the society. Thru her activities in these organizations she has gathered for herself a large number of friends who are sincerely saddened at the news of the death of this kindly lady.

Funeral services are to be held at 2 o'clock at the Munson home on West Grove street Thursday afternoon, Rev. A. M. Bailey officiating. Burial will take place at Forest Home Cemetery.
