LAWRENCE, JOHN

Newspaper article, not an obit.
Greenville Independent, Greenville, MI-January 30, 1918

John Lawrence Found Dead in Barn
John LAWRENCE, an aged German of about 75 years, was found dead in his barn last Friday by his nephew, Drier. Lawrence kept a calendar and each night checked off the passing day. The last day he checked off was January 18 and it was supposed he died on Saturday, the 19th. The barn door was open and the dead man lay on his back with arms stretched out and one leg drawn up. He was frozen stiff. A horse in the stall had eaten everything within reach and like the flock of chickens, was ravenous for food. He had no other stock. R. A. Brown took care of the body, which was taken to the home of his sister, Mrs. DRIER. Funeral was held Monday. Interment was at Montcalm cemetery. The old man lived alone and when last seen was usually well. It is probable he had a heart attack, which came upon him while doing his chores.

LORING, JUSTUS

LOUCKS, Mary Olevia

Greenville Independent, Greenville, MI, Wednesday, October 31, 1906
Mary Olevia Green, youngest daughter of Hiram and Marie Green, long since deceased, was born in Otisco upon a farm now included in the city of Belding, MI, Sept. 5, 1853, died at her home at "Baldwin Place" Greenville, MI, Oct. 22, 1906

Left an orphan at the early age of six years, she with her two surviving sisters found a home with their grandparents, Thomas and Hannah Stocking, names familiar to the pioneers of Otisco township and surrounding country. Nearly all of her school days were spent in the union school at Cooks Corners. In 1868 she went to Keene and made her home with her sister until her marriage to her now bereaved husband, Jacob H. Loucks, which occurred in the spring of 1872. Since then her home has been at Greenville.

Possessed of a cheerful, sunny disposition, added to a warm loving heart, she made many friends. Her life was one of activity, home and the loved ones there were her especial care. Although a great sufferer for some time past memory recalls no word of complaint amid it all. Leaning on the arm of the Infinite One, trusting His care over her she seemed to cast all her burdens upon him and smilingly journeyed on unto the end. Even then as she felt her strength failing, and suffering intensely, she said to the loving ones in attendance, "Say some encouraging words, say encouraging words," and as they did so, smiled and made answer, "That sounds good", and soon after lapsed into unconsciousness.

A loyal wife, a tender mother and a loving sister has gone to her reward. She was a member of the pioneer society and here, as in all the social walks of life, she was much beloved and found great pleasure in return. She loved her friends and was ever ready to welcome them to her heart and home. A sweet loving spirit has departed, the memory of which will be lasting as time itself, and will fall as a benediction upon us all. Sweetness of dispostion, kindness of heart and love for all were her chief characteristics. Possessing these qualities of heart and life as she did in such a marked degree caused her to be loved by both old and young.

Her life was a life of devotion and sacrifice to those of her own household. No thought of self seemed ever to invade her mind and not until forced by severe sickness to relinquish active duties did she cease her loving ministrations to those around her. She possessed many rare qualities as a wife, as a mother, and as a sister and the esteem in which she was held by her friends was evidenced by the knd words spoken and by the beautiful flowers sent as token of loving remembrance.

We marked the patience with which she bore
Her last sad hours of pain,
And though our hearts seem breaking now,
We could not witsh her back again.
Oh no! We could not, would not ask Thee, Lord
To give her back again.

GAIUS LULHAM

OVER HALF A CENTURY

Gaius Lulham, who Died Monday, has Resided Here Since 1853 - Gaius Lulham was born in Robertsbridge, Salehurst Parish, Sussex County, England; November 10, 1832. died at his home, north of the village, February 20, 1905, aged 72 years, 3 months and 10 days.  He was the son of William Lulham and Hannah Watson.  His father was a native of Denmark and his mother of England.  His father was a member of the Church of England and his mother belonged to the Close Baptist Church in Robertsbridge.  Gaius, the subject of this sketch was baptized in infancy, in the Church of England, and received his education in the Sunday School of that church.  He had two brothers and two sisters, only one of whom survives, a sister residing in Robertsbridge, England.  At the age of twenty, Mr. Lulham untied with the M.E. Church and for fifty-three years remained a faithful and consistent member of the same.  In 1853, in company with the late Charles Chick, he came to this vicinity to make his home, and together they organized the M.E. Church and a union Sunday Scholl in connection.  The latter was maintained as a union Sunday School for nearly thrity years.  He was superintendent of the Sunday School for five years, and for many years was steward and class leader besides holding other offices of trust and responsibility in the church.  In 1855 Mr.  Lulham purchased a farm, one mile north and two miles east of the present village of Carson City, and resided there until 1868, when he purchased the farm on which he resided the remainder of his life.  In March, 1856 he was united in marriage with Miss Jane Roberts, who with five sons and two daughters survive him.  These are Gaius William, Mrs. Mary Miller, of Edmore, John of this village, Charles of Greenville, George of Washington, Samuel of Marion, and Mrs. M.N. Mason of Crystal.  All were present at the funeral except George.  Mr. Lulham's death is the first one in the family.  Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church, Wednesday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. George Bullen officiating, and burial was made in the family lot here.  The flowers were beautiful.  He was a good citizen an obliging neighbor, a kind and indulgent husband and father, and a faithful friend.  The bereaved family take this means of expressing their thanks for all the kindness and sympathy shown them in their sorrow.

ROSIE LULHAM

SHE BROKE HER NECK

Mrs. S.S. Lulham, of Park Lake, Was Dead When Found - Special to the Chronicle.

Park Lake, May 8. -- The saddest thing that has happened in this locality for some time, occurred on Saturday morning, when Mrs. Rosie Lulham, wife of Samuel Lulham, fell near her home breaking her neck.  It was some little time before the body was found, as Mr. Lulham was at work a half mile from home.  Dr. Carrow was called and empaneled a jury who returned a verdict in accordance with the above facts.  A few weeks ago Mr. Lulham moved his family from the village to his farm, which is new and was beginning to make themselves a home.  During the winter both Mr. and Mrs. Lulham experienced religion during the revival meetings here, which is a consolation to the sorrowing husband and many friends.  She leaves to mourn a husband, four small children -- the oldest but 8 years of age, mother, two brothers and a sister, and a host of friends.  Mrs. Lulham was a member of the Gleaners in which order she carried $1,000 insurance.  The funeral was held from the school house, Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. E.E.Woolley, assisted by H.R. Wilson.   Undertaker DeYoung, of McBain had charge of the funeral.  The Gleaners performed the sad last rites, at the grave.

REVEREND GEORGE LUNN

STANTON MONITOR - Page 4; Vol. 1. No. 2—By Harm. (Harmon) Smith, Ed. & Publisher

Monthly—June, 1881—Terms: 25 Cts. A Year

OBITUARY.—Rev. George Lunn died at his home in the township of Fairplains, April 29, and his funeral took place at Fairplains Methodist chrurch last Sunday, (May 1st) the services conducted by Rev. A. C. Beach, of Greenville.  Father Lunn was in his 83d year, and leaves a family to mourn his loss, of four sons and two daughters, all residing in this county except Robert, Mrs. George Carter being now the oldest, in her sixtieth year, and Wm. P. Lunn, the youngest, now in his 39th year, living on the homestead where his father died.  The deceased was a native of England, emigrating to Detroit in 1830, 51 years ago, when it was only a promising village of a few hundred inhabitants. The streets were almost impassible and the little log shanties of the French and Indians presented a sorrowful spectacle. He remained in Wayne County a short time; thence he removed to Macomb County and then to Oakland County.  He removed Fairplains, Montcalm County, in June, 1847, 34 years ago, three years previous to the organiz-ation of the town. Soon after being appointed a local preacher of the M. E. Church, he organized and conducted the services of the first religious society of township and he has been the great pillar of the church until removed by death. Father Lunn has been a faithful church member for over sixty years, and an exhorter and preachers during all that time, laboring for the salvation of mankind. And, with the assistance of his sainted companion, who consecrated herself to God’s noble work, they together have done great good in this new county; and both were loved most by those who knew them best. Mother Lunn departed this life July 20th, 1867.

We shall miss thee, Father Lunn,
In our homes and everywhere,
But we know that thou art happy
Where the joyous angels are.
For a brighter crown is given,
And a happier home is thine,
Than kind friends could furnish for thee
On the restless waves of time.
Rest thee, loved one, may the angels
Guard and guide thee on heaven’s shore;
May we meet thee when earth’s shadows
Dim our visions never more.

FAIRPLAINS, March 14, 1881.—At the residence of Wm. P. Lunn, was held George Lunn’s 82nd Birthday Party. There was a very pleasant gathering of relatives and friends, of seventy-three persons. The Reverend gentleman was presented with a Nice Suit of Black Clothes by his children, and a very large easy Rocking Chair by his friends; also a nice Cane and a great many other presents we would be glad to mention, but space is too short. After reading the Poem and Presents all received, His Reverence rose, and the thanks he gave and the advice to meet him "up yonder," caused some sad thoughts and much rejoicing. In all, it was a splendid time. Com.

Though your locks are silvered o’er with care;
And aye, for you are growing old,
And life its story has nigh told.
Think not our hearts, with sorrow clad,
For, Oh! t’is bliss—t’is joy of’t had
To see you. We have lived together,
For thirty years enjoying pleasure;
Among us now so hale and well,
Our hearts with gratitude doth swell.
The work you have done, oh; all can tell,
No need upon such topics dwell.
Those who love Christ can sound you praise,
Can anthems sing, when you are in your grave.
When o’er your heart the lillies nod,
Your spirit stands before our God.
For Christian life, you’ve lived so true,
That death to you will not be new.
But death! why name that the Specter here?
We pray that many a circling year
Will pass before we lay to rest,
Your body in the grave yard crest.
’Twill be a very gloomy day,
When angels bear your soul away.
To us, when meeting in your church;
To see you not, will sadden much:
’Twill sadden all to hear a prayer,
Which Father Lunn doth not inspire:
To see your seat filled by some other,
We fear not, but hope as good a Brother.
We’ve seen you young—a handsome man,
Life’s joy and sorrows just began;
Unwrinkled was your brow with toil;
Life’s thread had not unwound its coil.
Then all was beautiful to view,
But now such fancies are but few,
Before the hard and mortal strife,
The BEST remains—the FUTURE LIFE!
This last you found worth all the rest,
But oh! It was an awful test.
And now behold the closing scene,
The sketch which follows is so keen:
An aged man, who hopes to fly,
Beyond the vale—beyond the sky:
To quit this earth where sin holds sway,
To pass from darkness unto day;
To meet that Mother, whose delight,
Was but to think of holy light;
To hear the sweet, angelic song,
Sung by a shining, countless throng!
O! would that we might be as pure,
That we might all be just as sure,
To ascend to God when laid to sleep!
And kindred friends around us weep!
Farewell, BROTHER LUNN—so dear,
God grant you life for many a year;
And may each friend now greeting you,
Live to the age of eighty-two.
