SHERIFFS OF MONTCALM COUNTY
1850 to 2006

HIRAM AMSBURY
Sheriff from January 1863-April 1863

Not much is known about the 6th sheriff of Montcalm County. Hiram Amsbury was born about 1825 in New York to Alexander and Emma Amsbury. He is listed as living with his parents in 1850 in Fairplains Township. A sister, Emiline (who married Joshua H. Noah, son of Joshua V. Noah) was born in Michigan about 1841. Hiram was also listed as a resident taxpayer for the year 1850. On September 18, 1858 at Sidney he was united in marriage to Emily Noah, daughter of Joshua V. and Ruth Fox Daniels Noah. To this union 2 children were born - George M. in 1859 and Sylvia (Emily) in 1861. In 1861 the Montcalm County seat was established in a pine forest and Hiram Amsbury is mentioned as being the closest white inhabitant. His log cabin was located four miles away in Sidney. Hiram was elected sheriff November 7, 1862 with his term to run from 1863-64. According to family history Hiram died in Sidney April 9, 1863 after less than a year in office.
