DEWITT C. CARPENTER
Sheriff from 1873-1874


Dewitt Charles Carpenter was born May 7, 1839 in New York State to Thomas and Anna Wright Carpenter. He enlisted as a Sergeant in Company D 94th Infantry Regiment from New York on October 24, 1861 at the age of 22. On September 14, 1862 he received a disability discharge. He married the former Maria L. Burtch on October 12, 1868 and around 1870 he, his wife, and daughter Effie settled in Vickeryville, Bushnell Township. He was elected sheriff November 7, 1872 and served from 1873-74. Dewitt and Maria were the parents of 5 children: Jessa Ellen, Maria Ephelyn (Effie), Anna Maryette (died in 1875 of cholera), Irvin and Clinton. Dewitt's wife, Maria (Mariah), died sometime before 1888 and he then married Hattie L. Dunn March 8, 1888 at Perry, Shiawassee County, MI. Hattie and Dewitt had at least one child, Albert. After Dewitt's term as sheriff he returned to farming and served as Vice President of the Montcalm County Agricultural Society for the term starting January 13, 1880. Dewitt and Hattie lived in Bushnell Township until his death on September 30, 1894.
