SHERIFFS OF MONTCALM COUNTY
1850 to 2006

DANIEL T. FARGO
Sheriff from 1855-1856

Daniel was born in Busti, Chatauqua County, New York on September 1, 1828 to Daniel Fargo Jr. and Margaret Devendorf Fargo; the fourth son in a family of ten children. His older brother, Gibson, was the first sheriff for the newly created Montcalm County. Daniel was nine years old when his parents moved to Michigan from New York. He attended branches of the Michigan University, and in 1847 came to Montcalm County and began work in a saw mill. This was the beginning of his life work and he continued in that business. He purchased the saw mill located at Bass Lake (now Pearl Lake) in the village of Sheridan from Ham, Charles and George Stanton. On November 2, 1852 he was elected county supervisor. On February 8, 1853 in Ionia County he married the former Phebe Ann Root, of Otsico Township. They were the parents of two children, Margaret A. and Hiram. Daniel was elected to the office of sheriff of Montcalm County November 7, 1854 and served for the years 1855-56. It is unclear whether it was he or his father, Daniel, who served in many leadership rolls within Fairplains Township during the period 1850-1864. When the Civil War broke out Daniel enlisted in the Second Michigan Cavalry and served for almost four years. He rose from private to the rank of captain. In 1865 he moved to the City of Ionia and actively engaged in lumbering. By 1900 he was living in Chicago still engaged in the lumber business at the age of 71.    Daniel died on May 3, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois, and was buried in Chicago's Rosehill Cemetery.
