SHERIFFS OF MONTCALM COUNTY
1850 to 2006

THOMAS J. HEBERT
Sheriff from 1981-1984

Thomas J. Hebert began his official duties as sheriff of Montcalm County January 1, 1981. In a close primary race held August 5, 1980 he and Larry Bogart, who was the current Undersheriff, both vied for the position on the Republican ticket. Hebert was elected by a 579 vote margin. At age 49 Thomas was currently serving as a Michigan State Police assistant district commander in the Upper Peninsula. That job consisted of supervising seven state police posts with 115 men. He resigned that position at the end of 1980 to begin his duties here.

Hebert's career in law enforcement began when he attended the Michigan State Police Academy and studied personnel management at Lansing Community College. He then served as a Michigan state trooper for 10 years; a state police detective for six years - with two years as an undercover officer specializing in narcotics, gambling and organized crime investigations; an assistant post commander (sergeant) for two years; and a post commander at Ionia and Lakeview posts (lieutenant) for seven years. He also served four years with the U.S. Air Force in the Korean War. He was a resident of Eureka Township for 14 years and was involved in the community as a member of the Greenville Rotary, served on the United Memorial Hospital board of trustees, was chairman of the Eureka Township planning commission, chairman of the Tri County River Planning Committee and a member of the St. Charles Catholic Church. He and his wife Betty were parents to two children.
