Sheriff from 1893-1896

Charles M. King was born on February 13, 1854 near Fremont, Ohio to Samuel and Mary King. His childhood was spent on a farm in Sandusky County, Ohio. In 1876 he married Alma Burgess and soon after he and Alma moved to Vestaburg, Michigan to live. They were the parents of five children - Ray, Anna, Celia, Floyd (who died in infancy) and Lou (who died in 1927). Charles served as deputy for seventeen years previous to his election as sheriff of Montcalm County, in 1892. He served as sheriff for two consecutive terms. Later he was elected coroner; an office he held until his death. In 1897 he moved to a farm west of Stanton, and from 1905-1909 he was proprietor of the Hotel King in Stanton. He then moved to a farm east of Stanton where he lived until about 1926 when he retired from active duties and became a resident of Stanton. He died May 11, 1930 at Edmore and was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Stanton.
