JAMES K. TRAIN
Sheriff from 1897-1900

James K. Train was born on April 29, 1847 in Steuben County, Indiana to Stephen C. and Caroline (Reynolds) Train. When he was about a month old his parents came to Michigan, settling in Cass County. James was sixteen years of age when he enlisted as a recruit in Company D, Sixth Regiment, Michigan Volunteer Infantry, for the Civil War. His regiment was attached to the Department of the Gulf and he joined in at Port Hudson, Louisiana, in January, 1864. He was mustered out at Greenville, Louisiana on August 20, 1865 and was discharged at Jackson, Michigan. He returned to Cass County but soon joined his parents who had relocated to Barry County. On Thanksgiving Day, 1868, he was joined in marriage to Eliza Jane Martin. They settled on a 40 acre farm in Orangeville Township, Barry County where they lived for three years. In 1871 they moved to Ionia where James was involved in the dray business while also keeping a boarding house for the benefit of workmen employed on the erection of the new prison. In September 1878 James and family moved to Edmore, Montcalm County, where he once again engaged in the dray business. In 1896 he was elected to the office of sheriff of Montcalm County and served for four years. During that time he made his home in Stanton. At the end of his term he moved back to Edmore and settled on his eighty acre farm. He was a prominent figure in local politics serving in most all of the Home Township offices and also serving as supervisor for five years. On June 14, 1901, he was commissioned as postmaster of Edmore. James died in 1925 and is buried at Vinewood Cemetery, Edmore. He and Eliza were parents to six children - Mark, Laura, Lee, Calvin K., John C. and Ora E. James was described as one of the most popular and best-known citizens of this county.
