Nathaniel was born in 1829 in New York. There was a sad accident on August 6, 1872 when Nathan Knapp was thrown from the tongue of a wagon which was loaded with hay…the wheel passing over his face, mangling it badly. Mr. Knapp lived in great distress for 5 days when death ended his sufferings. He leaves a wife and 6 children.

His wife died 28 years ago & Mrs. Dennison kept house for him until she married 21 yrs age since which time he has had one of the best homes with her. “Grandpa” Houghtaling was one of the solid steady kind of men that make the world better having lived in it. For years he has been a member of the Free-Will Baptist Church & a consistant one. When he first came to Elbridge he joined the M. E. Class Organized in the Sayles district and became its leader. He was a staunch prohibitionist, and his line of life & action had no uncertain sound about it in matters that pertained to what is right and good. The heighborhood where he lived and moved will miss him in his fatherly, quiet, pleasant ways and counsel…Rest in Peace.
