David T. Sorrick was a Civil War veteran. He enlisted in the army on August 4, 1862, and served in Co. A, 6^th Michigan Cavalry He was mustered out on June 21, 1865.

David Sorrick died of war related hip injuries on June 24, 1870, according to his pension file records. He is buried in Maplewood Cemetery, Lamont, Michigan. His home address was Six Corners, Ottawa County, MI.

David Sorrick received a gunshot wound in his hand at the battle of Sommersville Ford, VA, on September 16, 1863, and also received an injury on December 20, 1863, near Stevensburg, VA. He fell from his horse while patrolling when his horse stumbled while crossing a ditch. This fall resulted in a running sore on his right hip which disabled him. Records state that the running sore was growing worse with a continuous thick discharge and his wrist disability prevented him from writing. He was compelled to walk with crutches and a cane. The doctor stated that the wound was gradually undermining his strength. The doctor later reported on October 2, 1869, that David was very emaciated and feeble and also stated that the disease would in time destroy life and an operation might prove fatal.

David Sorrick married Rebecca Ann Stroble on August 5, 1852, in Marion County, Ohio. Two children were born to this marriage: Lydia Ann, born November 7, 1855, and Benjamin Franklin, born March 4, 1858, according to his pension file records.

Sexton of Maplewood Cemetery, Lavina Van Beek, and I went to Maplewood Cemetery to decide where to place the new Civil War gravestone for David Sorrick that Lavina had ordered. We found that this difficult to read gravestone, that was previously overlooked, was the original gravestone of David Sorrick, Civil War veteran. This original gravestone includes the dates that his wife had put on the gravestone in 1870. David Sorrick died June 24, 1870, age 43 years, 9 months, 20 days. A new Civil War gravestone will be placed next to this gravestone in 2010.
