CILLEY Family of Ottawa and Kent Counties

This chapter deals with the families of three Cilley siblings who came from New York, probably St. Lawrence County, to Ottawa County. Cynthia Cilley is our ancestor, who married Christopher Salton, and her two brothers were James and Oscar. Not much is known yet about the parents, William Cilley and Charlotte Golden, and there may be other siblings who either stayed in New York or migrated elsewhere. There was a Cilley family who lived in Ionia County, but it is not known if they were related in any way to "our" Cilleys.

First Generation

1. WILLIAM 1 CILLEY, was born in New Hampshire. He married CHARLOTTE GOLDEN in New Hampshire. Most references give the birthplace of CHARLOTTE as Vermont, but one place states she was born in New York. William and Charlotte must have moved to New York some time after their marriage, as their children were all born in New York, except for Cyntha, who said in Census records she was born in Canada, so they may have lived there for a time. They were possibly from Andover, Merrimack Co, NH (Cilleyville?).

WILLIAM CILLEY and CHARLOTTE GOLDEN had the following known children:

+ 2 i. CYNTHA LOUISA 2 CILLEY was born FEB 1820.

+ 3 ii. Oscar F. CILLEY was born APR 1824.

+ 4 iii. James Golden CILLEY was born OCT 1827.

Second Generation

2. CYNTHA LOUISA 2 CILLEY (WILLIAM 1 ) was born in Ontario, Canada FEB 1820. CYNTHA died 13 SEP 1902 in Tallmadge Twp, Ottawa, Michigan, at 82 years of age. She married CHRISTOPHER FOSS SALTON in St. Lawrence Co, New York, ca 1840. She had 9 children, 7 living in 1900.

See SALTON Chapter for more information about this family.

3. Oscar F. 2 CILLEY (WILLIAM 1 ) was born in New York APR 1824. Oscar died 1912 at 88 years of age. His body was interred 1912 in Walker Twp, Kent, Michigan, Greenwood Cemetery, Block K, Lot 40, Space 3. There was a Glenn Cilley buried next to Oscar and Paulina, but there was no stone. Was this possibly a son who died young? He married twice. He married Paulina L. BEF 1857. Paulina was born in Massachusetts 9 AUG 1821. She died 14 FEB 1861 at 39 years of age. Her body was interred FEB 1861 in Walker Twp, Kent, Michigan, Greenwood Cemetery, Block K, Lot 40, Space 2.

UNCERTAINTY

How soon will I pass to that beautiful land,

Where nothing is known of sorrow?

My life may stretch to a considerable span,

It may be, perhaps, but tomorrow.

Then let me so live my life, while yet here,

That when I have gone, friends may say,

He was honest and true, he'd deal fairly with you,

He admired pure life and fair play.

How soon will I pass to that beautiful realm,

Where sorrow and sin have no place?

It may be in an hour my life is o'erwhelmed,

And I've come to the end of my race,

Then let me so live, and to my fellow man give,

Hist just dues, while dealing down here,

That when I have heard the summoning word,

I'll know nothing of worry or fear.
