NICHOLS Family
of Ottawa and Osceola Counties

Our Nichols family begins with Charles A. Nichols, Sr. 1817-1898. We know he was born in Vermont, but not much is known of his family or early life there. Charles’ family and parents need to be researched further. It is thought that Charles and his wife, Maryette, may have lived in New York for a time before coming to Michigan. The following is the story of his descendants.

First Generation

1. CHARLES A. 1 NICHOLS SR., son of ISAAC NICHOLS and EUNICE, was born in Vermont (perhaps Rutland) 22 JUN 1817. His death certificate shows age 75 yrs, 6 mos, 6 days, which would be 22 June 1823. CHARLES died 28 DEC 1898 in LeRoy, Osceola, Michigan, at 81 years of age of paralysis. His body was interred DEC 1898 LeRoy Twp, Osceola, Michigan, LeRoy Cemetery.

He married MARYETTE F. RISING in Vermont, ca 1840. MARYETTE was born in Vermont 10 MAR 1820. She died 17 JUN 1894 in LeRoy, Osceola, Michigan, at 74 years of age. Her body was interred JUN 1894 LeRoy Twp, Osceola, Michigan, LeRoy Twp. Cemetery. Her parents were both born in Vermont, and she was born in either Rutland, Vermont or New York. Census records differ. Her maiden name has been seen as both Rising and Samuels, so it is unknown at this time which it was, but Rising seems the more likely. Several different spellings have been seen for her first name, ranging from Marietta, Mariette, Maryetta, Muriett, etc.

Charles and Maryette had married and had one child, Charles, before coming to Ottawa County, Michigan before 1853, and perhaps as early as 1840. He must have been one of the earliest settlers in the area when it was still a wildnerness. He was a farmer near Lamont on what is now Johnson Street, and in 1861 and 1866 Charles A. Nichols was listed in Lamont as path master and road overseer, and "Nichols Hill" was mentioned in regards to the flood of 1868. In 1869 he was listed as a voter in Lamont. The 1880 census shows his grandson, Delbert, living in his household. This would have been after the death of Del's mother in childbirth.

According to Michigan Place Names: "Lamont - Ottawa Cty, in 1833 Harry & Zine Steele settled here on the banks of the Gd. River, in Tallmadge Twp; it became known as Steel's Landing and was given a p.o. of that name on 9 Jan 1851, with Reuben Reynolds as its first pmaster; in 1851 the Steels platted the village as Middleville, from its location midway bet. Gd Rapids & Gd Haven, but its p.o. remained St. Landing; in 1855 the offer of Lamont Chubb of Gd Rapids, of a road scraper in exchange for renaming the village for him was accepted, and the village and its p.o. were renamed Lamont on 2 July 1856[Henry C. Slaughter, Page; PO archives]"

In later years, Charles and Maryette moved to LeRoy in Osceola County, perhaps to be near their son, Charles, and daughter, Sylvia Crawford, who lived there, and their son, Lucius who lived in Manistee. They passed away in LeRoy and were buried in the LeRoy Township Cemetery.

This Allen family is not to be confused with the Allens dealt with in a previous chapter in this same book. Harriett died 11 APR 1938 in Coopersville, Ottawa, Michigan, at 78 years of age. Her body was interred 14 APR 1938 in Coopersville, Ottawa, Michigan, Coopersville Cemetery.

NICHOLS - Mrs. Harriett Nichols, aged 78, passed away at her home in Coopersville Monday evening. Surviving are the husband, Charles Nicholds; one son, Clayton of Muskegon; one daughter, Mrs. Florence VanRaalte of Ferrysburg; one sister, Mrs. Gilbert Herring of Mapleton, Ore. The body reposes at the Van Allsburg Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at the Coopersville Methodist church Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial in Coopersville cemetery.

Charles was born in Rutland, Vermont and moved to a farm between Berlin and Lamont as a child with his parents when the area was still a frontier. He served in Company I, 16th Michigan Infantry in the Civil War, enlisting in Grand Rapids February 15, 1864 at the age of 19. This unit was part of the army of the Potomac. In May, the unit participated in the battle of the Wilderness, then went to Spottsylvania, operating in flanking operations for General Grant's army. Most of the fighting of this unit was in Virginia--Ny River, North Anna, Noel's Turn, Hanover, Tolopotomy, Magnolia Swamp, Bethesda Church, Cold Harbour, Gaine's Mills, Petersburg, Weldon Railroad, Peeble's Farm, Hatcher's Run, Dabney's Mill, White Oak Road, Quaker Road, Five Forks, Amelia Court House, High Bridge, and Appomatox Court House. At one time during battles, Charles was on the front lines for seven days, and his uniform was riddled with bullet holes, but he came away with only a shoulder wound. He was taken to Washington with his injury, and in May, 1865, the regiment took up it's line of march for Washington, D.C., where it participated in the Grand Review with the army of the Potomac on May 23. It is thought a possibility that Charles may also have been in the Grand Review parade. In July, they had returned to Michigan, where they mustered out.

Upon Charles' return from the War, he became a farmer on a piece of land between Lamont and Berlin, located on Johnson Street across the road from his father. He married Sarah White in 1868, both at the age of 22. They had a daughter, Nettie, about 1870. She apparently died young, and Sarah died four years later. The following year, Charles married Harriett Allen, by whom he had 10 more children, only four of whom grew to adulthood. Charles was 5'6" tall with hazel eyes and brown hair. In the 1880 census they had a 1 year old niece living with them, L____ Sutton. Her first name was illegible.

Charles lived for several years in LeRoy, Osceola County, Michigan, where he organized the G.A.R. Post and in Luther, where he was the last living member of the G.A.R. Post. He then returned to the Coopersville area.

Marriage for Charles A. Nichols and Sarah E. White. They were married in Polkton Twp. March 22, 1868. Both were age 22. She was born in New York. They were married by Wm Goldrich. Entry # 143, Page 10. Was recorded May 15, 1868.

Harriet Ann Allen marriage. Charles was 29 and Harriet was 16. The entry # 379 page 119, they were married in Tallmadge Twp in September 26, 1875. Was recorded September 30, 1875.

Muskegon Chronicle? Page 14: Last Survivor of Luther G.A.R. Post,
C.A. Nichols, 95, Looks to Memorial Day Now Muskegon Resident, Living With Son, Clayton, He Enjoys Good Health At 95 years of age, Charles A. Nichols, of 710 Catawba avenue, last survivor of the Luther post of the Grand Army of the Republic, is looking forward to celebrating Memorial Day in Muskegon. He still enjoys rather good health for his many years. A pioneer of Michigan, Mr. Nichols was born in Rutland, Vermont on December 27, 1845, but moved as a small child with his parents to Marne, then known as Berlin, between Muskegon and Grand Rapids. They cleared and worked a farm there.

When he was 19 years old, he enlisted in the 16th Michigan Infantry, on Feb. 15, 1864, at Grand Rapids. Most of his service was in Virginia. At one time during the conflict he was in the front firing line for seven consecutive days. His uniform was riddled by bullets, he says, but he came through the fight with only a minor shoulder wound. He was taken to the army hospital at Washington where he was discharged in May, 1865.

LIVED NEAR MARNE

The war over, Mr. Nichols returned to Michigan and lived on the farm at Marne for about 10 years. He then moved to a farm at LeRoy where he lived until 1913. In that year he retired and moved to Coopersville where he lived for 25 years. He is now making his home with his son, Clayton Nichols, on Catawba avenue here. Mr. Nichols helped organize the G.A.R. post at LeRoy and was one of its active members until it disbanded. He then joined the G.A.R. at Luther. He is the last survivor of that post. Of all his comrades in Company I of the 16th Infantry, Mr. Nichols and John Parks of Coopersville are said to be the only survivors. OUTLIVES EIGHT CHILDREN

Mr. Nichols was married to Harriet Ann Allen at LaMont in 1875. She was 16. She died a few years ago at the age of 78. They were parents of 10 children, two of whom are still living. They are Clayton, with whom Mr. Nichols makes his home, and a daughter, Mrs. Florence VanRaalte, of Spring Lake. He has 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Nichols has never used intoxicants and he gave up the use of tobacco 12 years after the Civil war. However, he likes coffee and drinks it three times a day.

Grand Rapids Press obit. May 26, 1941, Page 16: NICHOLS - Charles A. Nichols, aged 95, (Civil war veteran), of 710 Catawaba av., Muskegon, passed away sunday afternoon at Mercy hospital. Surviving are one daughter, one son, twenty grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. The body reposes at the Kammeraad Funeral Home, Coopersville, where services will be held Wednesday at 3 o'clock. Interment in Coopersville cemetery.

The Coopersville Observer, Thursday, May 29, 1941, Page 1: CHAS. NICHOLS, AGED 95 ANSWERS THE FINAL CALL - Charles Nichols passed away at Muskegon last Sunday afternoon, at the home of his son Clayton, where he had made his home for the last two or three years, since the death of Mrs. Nichols. They had made their home here for a good many years, though not here all the time. Mr. Nichols was born in 1845, at Rutledge, Vermont, but came to Michigan in youth. His enlistment in the Federal forces for the Civil War, was made at Grand Rapids February 15, 1864. His home since Civil War days has been in western Michigan, either at Leroy, in Osceola county, or at Marne or Coopersville. It was very interesting at times to hear him tell of the early days in this section, and of his experiences in woods and fields here.

Living here for many years, he was one of those who rarely missed the observance of Memorial Day here, and for the last two years since the number of veterans was reduced to two, he was here on each occasion. His body was brought to the Kammeraad Funeral Home here and the services were held here Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. Victor Niles being in charge of the last service. Burial was in the Coopersville cemetery. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Dick VanRaalte, of Spring Lake, and by the son, Clayton, at Muskegon; by 20 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. The passing of Mr. Nichols reduces to one the number of veterans of the Civil War living here. That one is John M. Park, who is still strong and healty, although he passed his 92nd birth anniversary during the past few months. It is said that there are only about 60 Civil War veterans still living in Michigan.

The Muskegon Chronicle, Monday, May 26, 1941: Civil War Vet Marches With Comrades Gone Before Charles A. Nichols, who planned to parade on Memorial Day as one of Muskegon's two survivors of the Civil war, marched today with a greater host of comrades in the Valhalla of beyond.

Mr. Nichols died Sunday in Mercy hospital. At 95 years of age he was the last survivor of the Luther post of the Grand Army of the Republic. In comparatively good health for a man of his advanced age, he had looked forward to Memorial Day observance. He was taken ill on May 17 and his condition was immediately serious. He lost consciousness and his death was expected momentarily. The body was taken to Kammeraad funeral home in Coopersville from which funeral service arrangements will be announced.

His death leaves Muskegon with one Civil war veteran. He is Howard Bond, 97 years of age, who lives at 1366 Sanford street. Mr. Bond plans to participate in the Memorial day services.

Mr. Nichols made his home with his son, Clayton Nichols, at 710 Catawba avenue. Although a pioneer of Michigan, he was born in Rutland, Vt., on Dec. 27, 1845. As a child he came to this state with his parents, who settled at Berlin, now known as Marne. They cleared and worked a farm there. On Feb. 15, 1864, when he was 10 [should be 19] years old, Mr. Nichols enlisted with the 16th Michigan Infantry at Grand Rapids. Most of his service in the conflict was in Virginia. For seven consecutive days he was on the front firing line at one time. He came out of that battle, his uniform riddled by bullets, but with only a minor shoulder wound. He was taken to the army hospital at Washington. There he was discharged from service in May 1865. With the war over Mr. Nichols came back to Michigan. He lived on the old farm at Marne for about 10 years, then moved to a farm at LeRoy where he lived until 1913. In that year he retired and moved to Coopersville, making his home there for 25 years. Leaves Only Two Children Mr. Nichols was married at Lamont in 1875 to Harriett Ann Allen. She died a few years ago at the age of 78 years. They were the parents of 10 children, only two of whom are still living.

Mr. Nichols helped organize the G.A.R. post at LeRoy. He was one of its active members until it disbanded. He then joined the Luther post and outlived all of its members. His death left one survivor of the company in which he served during the war--Company I of the 16th Infantry. He is John Parks, of Coopersville. Surviving is the son, Clayton, and a daughter, Mrs. Florence VanRaalte, of Spring Lake. There are 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

There were apparently three other children who are unknown at this time, but were either stillborn or died at a very young age.

3. LUCIUS L. 2 NICHOLS (CHARLES A. 1 ) was born in Tallmadge, Ottawa, Michigan 23 APR 1853. LUCIUS died 23 DEC 1929 in Manistee, Manistee, Michigan, at 76 years of age. His body was interred 26 DEC 1929 in Manistee, Manistee, Michigan, Oak Grove Cemetery. Block D-1, Lot 10, Grave 6

He married twice. He married PAULINA L. SALTON in Lamont, Ottawa, Michigan, 25 JUN 1874. Vol. 5, Page 101. Married by Rev. James Draper in double ceremony with Robert and Sylvia (Nichols) Crawford. Witnesses: Robert Crawford, Lisbon, New York and Sylvia Crawford, Tallmadge.

PAULINA was born in Russell, St. Lawrence, New York 1855. PAULINA was the daughter of CHRISTOPHER FOSS SALTON and CYNTHA LOUISA CILLEY.
PAULINA died 09 SEP 1878, presumably in Manistee, Manistee, Michigan, at 23 years of age. There is no record of her death on file in the State of Michigan, but Manistee Co. may not have kept records at that early date. MRS. DORA C. NICHOLS DIES - A resident of Manistee for many years, Mrs. Dora C. Nichols, 89, died at 1:40 a.m. today at her home, 220 Arthur st., of general debility. Born in Stevens Point, Wis., she came here to make her home about 70 years ago. Her husband preceded her in death 10 years ago. Surviving are a brother, Clarence Whitehouse of Detroit; three nieces, Mrs. Rolf Thompson, of Manistee, Mrs. George Otwell of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Mrs. Louis Sizer of Broken Arrow, Okla.; and a nephew, Cecil Gunn of Manistee. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 from the LaValle funeral home with the Rev. Scott MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends are asked to omit flowers.

Lucius grew up on the family farm between Lamont and Berlin, and married Paulina Salton in a double wedding in Lamont with Lucius' sister, Sylvia and her husband, Robert Crawford. Lucius was a farmer in the Tallmadge area, and in 1875 was listed as a voter in Tallmadge Twp. Walter was born in Manistee in 1877, so Lucius must have moved there some time between July 1875 and November 1877.

Paulina died in childbirth along with a baby in 1878, leaving Delbert, age 4, and Walter, age 2, motherless. In the 1880 Census, after Paulina's death, their son, Delbert, was shown living with his Nichols grandparents in Talmadge, and Walter living with his aunt and uncle, James and Lucy (Nichols) Salton, in Tallmadge. In March of 1887, Lucius had married Dora Whitehouse in Manistee, and they took a wedding trip to Grand Rapids. Lucius' second wife had no compassion for little boys, so they were sent off to the family back in Lamont. Lucius was an edger at this time in a lumber mill and lived in East Lake. An edger was a machine with adjustable and stationary saw blades that would cut the rough edges from boards to straighten them. In 1897 and 1898 he was shown residing in Canfield Hills (Canfield Lake is just south of Manistee). Some time after 1897, he became a well driller, and was living at 220 Arthur Street, which is now the site of the Super 8 Motel on 31. Lucius died of apoplexy at age 76.

16. WALTER L. 3 NICHOLS (LUCIUS L. 2 , CHARLES A. 1 ) was born in Manistee, Manistee, Michigan 02 NOV 1877. WALTER died 7 NOV 1904 in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw, Michigan, at 27 years of age. His body was interred 8 NOV 1904 LeRoy Twp, Osceola, Michigan, LeRoy Twp. Cemetery.

He married CORA MAE ALLEN in LeRoy, Osceola, Michigan, 23 DEC 1899. CORA was born in LeRoy, Osceola, Michigan 16 SEP 1882. CORA was the daughter of ROBERT HENRY ALLEN and EMMA ANGELINE RIGGS. She married Marcus John UMLOR Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan, 25 JUN 1907. Book 8, Page 133.  CORA died 17 JUN 1965 in Wright Twp, Ottawa, Michigan, at 82 years of age. Her body was interred 21 JUN 1965 in Wright Tp., ------ about Cora and her second marriage and subsequent children, see Allen Chapter.)

After Walter's mother, Paulina, died in childbirth in 1878, Walter and Delbert apparently went to live with relatives in Lamont, as the 1880 census shows Walter, age 2 living with his aunt and uncle, Lucy and James Salton in Tallmadge, and Delbert with his grandparents. Walter and his brother, Delbert, lived in East Lake, across the lake from Manistee, Michigan. They are listed in the 1900 census as setters in the saw guild. A setter, at the direction of the head sawyer in the sawmill, worked on the shotgun carriage, and was responsible for adjusting the width of the cut. A reciprocating shotgun carriage was a steam-driven platform on wheels. It carried a log into the bandsaw blade for cutting, and would shoot forwards and backwards on a track, cutting stock on each forward motion. The dogger and setter would ride on this, and lock and adjust the log to facilitate the cutting. The dogger would position the dogs, which was a pointed, metal tool used to hold the log in place. These sound like dangerous jobs to me! Men who worked in the sawmills earned more money than those who worked in the camps; however, they had to provide for their own room and board, unlike camp workers. Edna had said that Walter and Delbert had owned a sawmill, but I think that they just worked in one, although they may have had a position of some responsibility, and perhaps might have owned an interest in it.

Walter had sugar diabetes and bright's disease. He was in Ann Arbor in the hospital for a time before he died when Edna was 2 years old. The only memory she had of her father was of him swinging her on his foot when she was very little.

"They lived on a farm in Caledonia, Michigan. My mom and uncle Maury must have been close because we spent a lot of our time with them and their family. They had such a big family they needed a big car for transportation, so they bought one of those old station wagons that was held together by wood. I still remember that, it was such a sight, we just "ohed" and awed" at it and then argued who was going to ride in it first. Their farm house was quite primitive by our standards today. They had only one source of heat and that was a big black cook stove in the kitchen. The upstairs had holes cut into the floor with register grids over them for heat to come up from down stairs. They made it easy to eavesdrop on the adults in the living room. When I would stay out there in the late 1940s, aunt Marian would put a big wash tub on the stove full of water toward the end of the day and give all us kids a bath in it. Wow, I have not thought about this stuff in years! We had a lot of our family get togethers out there, it was great. Mostly my sister's and I hung out with the four oldest kids, Terry, Philip, Kathy and later Keith." - Diane LaDow

"I remember we used to go with aunt Marian and uncle Maurie to their farm. I remember that it was a dairy farm and how the cows were all in a neat row in the barn and how it really smelled. We used to have so much fun out there that believe it or not now when I come across that smell it brings back all kinds of fond memories." - Diane LaDow

Diane’s mother was Theresa Abigail Meaney who was married to Otto Herman Finch. Theresa was a sister to Maurice. Maurice lived in Alto, Michigan. He and his family attended Holy Family Catholic Church.
