Amos May was born in Vermont, the son of Lyman and Martha May. He was a farmer.

He was a veteran of the Civil War and enlisted in Co. H, 1^st New Hampshire Heavy Artillery. He moved to Michigan after the war and died of diarrhea on November 14, 1887, age 58 years, 8 months and 15 days. He is buried in Allendale Township Cemetery, Lot # 149, grave 7. Clara May, possibly a child, died in 1879 is buried in Lot 149, grave 8.
