Civil War Veteran Called by Death

Horace B. Wood

Horace B. Wood, aged 92, a veteran of the Civil War, and father of Mrs. Herman Aurich of Nunica, died late Saturday at the Soldiers’ Home in Grand Rapids. He was one of three Civil War veterans in the Home. He was a private in Co. G, 7th Battalion, Rhode Island Infantry, and served 44 months. He had been admitted to the Home, with Mrs. Wood, in January of this year.

Surviving besides the daughter, are the widow; eighteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. The body was brought to the Van Allsburg Funeral Home in Coopersville.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Nunica Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, with burial in the Nunica Cemetery., Rev. Leonard Lee and Rev. Hugh Williams of the Adventist church of which Mr. Wood was a member, officiated, assisted by Rev. H. R. Strong, pastor of the local church. Raymond Rankin Post, American Legion, conducted the final rites, according the deceased Civil War veteran the full military honors.
