CAPTION:   More than 60 years ago, polio held U.S. families in a grip of terror--especially during the summertime.
People tried to keep their children safe from the potentially paralyzing disease by keeping them out of public places
such as pools, parks and theaters.  In early 1955, Onaway had 199 polio pioneers receive the shots at the school.  The 
Polio Foundation furnished the vaccines, which were administered by Dr. Parmenter, Dr. Finch and Joe Vallee of Rogers
City.  First- and second-grade children from Glawe School (7), Hacket Lake (4), Millersburg (39), Onaway (85), 
Roberts School (10), Adventists (5), Vilburn (9). Waverly and Tower (40), received shots.  From the archives of the
