CAPTION: Right on the front page of the Dec. 8, 1966 Onaway News was a photo of Robert and Alice Umphrey, who were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. The couple renewed their vows in a single-ring ceremony. Alice was from Tawas, while her husband moved to Onaway in 1907. The couple had one child while living in Onaway, Everett, who was lost in World War II. Two hundred guests greeted Robert and Alice Nov. 5, 1966 at Whittemore Methodist Church. The aisles and altar were decorated with gold and yellow mums. In other Onaway news, state police were investigating an act of vandalism which wrecked havoc Thanksgiving Day for Grace O'Connor, who was in the area visiting her parents, but during a stop at the Ocqueoc Falls, someone slashed the back tires of her Volkswagon. She had been at the falls for only 20 minutes. The investigation is ongoing.
