1840 Census
extracted from the History of Sanilac County 1834-1954

1840 United States census of the Township of Lexington, St. Clair County, State of Michigan, including all that territory which later became Sanilac and Huron Counties.

Males 236.  Females 177.  188 were under 15 years of age.  Two families were engaged in manufacturing (no doubt operating a saw mill) and all others were engaged in agriculture.  The term agriculture covered a lot of ground, cutting the trees and clearing the ground to growing a few acres of grain and potatoes.  Also turning the trees which they cut into salable products such as tan bark, cedar posts and split shingles.  There was no person over the age of 70.

There were three schools and 45 recorded scholars.

The names such as Hyde, Sheldon, Cummings, Simmons, Hollister, Stephens, Burtch, Huckins, Cooper, Galbraith and Simons contributed to much of our early history.  Descendants of many of those early settlers still live in the county.

This census was dated September 14, 1840 and was the first ever taken of this territory.
