Robert was born September 9, 1937, the son of the late Robert James I and Dorothy (Colombo) McElgunn. He was raised in Detroit and was a graduate of Catholic Central High. Robert was a United States Army Veteran, a member of the NRA, and a Chrysler Motors retiree. Robert was a Riley Township resident for almost 50 years, where he raised his family as members of the Holy Family Parrish, Memphis. He was an avid outdoorsman (understatement), artistically gifted, an intelligent, big hearted man. Robert suffered through loss and illness, but we were all the more Blessed to have been witness to his quirky imagination, incomparable memory, and ready laugh. God Bless you Pops, rest in your forever home with Our Heavenly Father and all those who have gone before us....oh, what tales you shall tell!! Robert leaves behind a daughter, Julie Vasquez; two sons and a daughter-in- law, William (Susan) and Kevin; grandsons Joshua, Nicolas, and Matthew all of Lincoln Park and Bobby of Grand Rapids; siblings, Joseph (Gina) McElgunn, Annie Malik, Paul (Ann) McElgunn, James (Linda) McElgunn, Michael (Gayle) McElgunn, and Thomas (Mary) McElgunn; brother-in-law, Bernard (Susie) Smaglinski and sister-in-law, Sandra McElgunn, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa (Smaglinski); son, Robert James III; son-in-law, Robert Vasquez and sister, Mary Catherine Malik. Rite of Christian Burial will be 12:00 p.m. Friday, January 8, 2021, at Holy Family Catholic Parish, Memphis, with 11:00 a.m. visiting. Fr. John Nedumcheril, associate pastor will officiate. Burial will be in Memphis Cemetery, where Robert will be alongside his beloved wife and son. A family celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
