James William Ackerson, aged 72 of Stanton, passed away April 26, 2014. He 
suffered a massive stroke which led to heart failure. 

He was the youngest of eight children of Glenn and Ivah (Gates) Ackerson.  He 
was born February 15, 1942 in Ionia Township.  He was preceded in death by his 
parents, an infant sister Ella Mabel, sister Lorraine Barrett, sisters-in-law; 
Wilma (Glenn) and Betty (Louie), his brothers; Glenn, Louie, Frank "Ed", and 
Donald, brothers-in-law; Delbert Johnson, Nelson Barrett and Kirmeth "Chum" Van 
Ocker, niece Peggy Prebble and nephew Louie Johnson.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years Karen (Hoople), daughter Dianne Mitchell 
of Sidney, son James, Jr. of Portland and grandchildren Emily Ackerson of Ionia 
and Hogan Ackerson of Portland.  He is also survived by sister Darlene Van 
Ocker, sisters-in-law; Mary (Ed) and Adabel (Don), several nieces and nephews 
and great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.

He was a resident of Palo and graduated from Ionia High School.  He retired 
from General Motors of Lansing in the 1990's from the paint repair department.  
He raised his family in Portland and moved to the Stanton area upon 
retirement.  He enjoyed the outdoors and especially the winter months in Yuma, 
Arizona.
 
There will be a celebration of his life on May 17 at the Sheridan VFW Hall, 
located at 206 Washington St. in Sheridan, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.  We will eat at 
6 p.m.  Please bring/share your memories of Jim and dress casually.  In lieu of 
flowers, please consider memorial donations directed to the Commission on Aging 
programs of Ionia and Montcalm Counties.  Arrangements by Lake Funeral Home in 
Ionia.
