He was 90 years old. Doc was born Jan. 8, 1925, in Stillwater, N.Y., to Joseph and Helen Andenno. He attended grade school at St. Peter’s Academy and high school in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. After graduating high school he was drafted into the armed forces. He attended basic training at Fort McClellan, Ala. Doc proudly served in the 3rd Infantry Division during World War II, where he was stationed in Casablanca and Oran, Naples. As a combat infantry wireman, he received many awards including a Purple Heart, Bronze Star for meritorious action, four bronze battle stars, one Bronze Arrowhead for the assault on southern France, European Theatre of Operations Victory Medal, Presidential Unit Citation and the French Fourragere Unit Citation for exceptional bravery. After his return from service, Doc attended Sienna College in Loudensville, N.Y., where he completed his pre-med studies. He then transferred to Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and graduated as a doctor of osteopathy in 1956. Doc “The Whistling Doctor” was a busy and committed physician. In 1960, he moved to Belding and began his independent practice. He spent many hours making house calls and provided exceptional medical attention to his patients. Doc delivered more than 300 babies, including the only triplets born at Belding Hospital. Community involvement was something that was very important to Doc. He served on the city council, school board, library board and St. Joseph’s Pastoral council. One position he truly enjoyed was being the Belding High School football physician for 20 years. Doc served on the planning board for the new high school. He was essential to the design and planning of Belding Hospital where he acted as chief of staff. Doc was also Santa at the Depot for five years. His numerous community awards included Belding Professional Women’s – Man of the Year, City of Belding Annual Award, BHS Athletic Hall of Fame, and Grand Marshal Labor Day Parade. His hobbies included: fishing, gardening, skiing, bow hunting, and working in the basement workshop. He created intricate stained glass windows and used these particular skills to restore the stained glass at the mausoleum, with his daughter Patti. He was a lover of art, Norman Rockwell, books and family. In 1953, Doc married his beloved wife Jan in Chicago, Ill. Together they welcomed four children, Carole, Patti, Don and Tom. In the big white house on Hanover Street, they lived in faith and overflowing love. He was an exceptional husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He cherished the time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Doc cared very deeply for all those close to his heart. Of all his lifetime accomplishments his family was the greatest. He believed, “How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life you will have been all of these.” – George Washington Carver. Doc was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Helen Andenno; sister, Mary Alice; and his daughter, Patti Lea. He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife Jan; children, Carole Adams, Don (Sherri) Andenno and Tom Andenno; grandchildren, Libby (Neal) Rouston, Katie (Matt) Rogers, Brad and Haylee Batzer; Shelby and Devin Andenno, Dustin and Daryn Dexter and Anthony Andenno; great-grandchildren, Avery and Wyatt Rogers, Beckett and Emerson Rouston; and special cousin Wanda Baker. Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Belding, with Father Mark Bauer presiding. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today with a rosary prayed at 8 p.m. at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Patti Batzer Education Scholarship Fund at Belding High School or the Belding Museum.
