Gladys Irene Bates, 80, of Portland, passed away on December 23, 2006. 

She was born September 3, 1926 in Eagle, MI. the daughter of Mark and Gertrude 
(Cooper) Brokaw. Gladys enjoyed playing cards and following the Detroit 
Tigers. She loved spending time on Drummond Island, but her greatest love was 
her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Gladys was a charter 
member of the V.F.W. Post #4090 Woman's Auxiliary in Portland. 

She was preceded in death by he husband, LaVern, son-in-law, Neil McDiarmid, 
son James R. Bates and a sister, Vida Kransz. Surviving are her daughters, 
Bonnie McDiarmid of Knoxville, TN and Nancy Harmon of Portland; 7 
grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; sisters Marian (Randy) VanValkenburg of 
Dickerson Lake and Judy (Jerry) Falor of Beaverton; brother Leon Brokaw of 
Eagle; special friend Corabelle DeClerg of Portland. 

Services were conducted by Pastor Marilyn V. Danielson December 27 at the 
Church of the Nazarene, 9466 Cutler Rd., Portland.  For those wishing, 
contributions may be made to the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan in memory of 
Gladys.
