DeVilo Stelman Bishop, 93, long-time Ionia resident, died peacefully at 
Sparrow Hospital in Lansing on Thursday, April 2, 2009, after a very brief 
illness.  DeVilo was born on Nov. 9, 1915 in Mecosta County, the second son of 
Elva Davis and Frederick Devilo Bishop.  He attended Ionia High School, and in 
1938 he married Hazel Lucile Dinning, mother of his two sons, Max D. and 
William L. Bishop.  In 1962, following the death of his first wife, DeVilo 
married Beryl MacPherson Mathews and became father to her two children, Marcia 
and Ross Mathews.  

For 40 years, DeVilo worked at the Ionia State Hospital, retiring as the Night 
Supervisor.  He was known for his strong work ethic, and frequently held more 
than one job at a time.  He even built his own home north of Ionia in 1953.  
He also loved to play golf and one of his proudest achievements was to get a 
hole-in-one when he was 84 years old.  He continued playing golf as late as 
last summer.  DeVilo was hard to keep still; he always wanted to get the job 
done and felt he could do it best himself.  This included shoveling snow, 
raking leaves and mowing the lawn, even when he was in his 90’s.  He had more 
energy than many who are much younger.  Another attribute his family really 
appreciated about DeVilo was his sense of humor, which was still apparent even 
on the day he died.

DeVilo was predeceased by his brothers Melvin and Ronald Bishop.  He is 
survived by Beryl Bishop, his devoted and loving wife of 47 years, and his 
sons Max (Becki) and Bill (Rosa) Bishop and Ross Matthews; daughter Marcia 
Mathews; eight grandchildren, Lisa (Phil) Davisson, Cathy Bishop, Faith 
Bishop, Shannon (Chris) Long, Jessica Bishop, Bill Bishop, Ellen (Brian) Klem 
and Rob VanCleave; and three great-granddaughters, Grace and Lola Long and 
Caylynn Bishop.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church 
in Ionia with Rev. Bob Nixon and Rev. David Baak officiating.  The family will 
receive friends and relatives 1 p.m. until time of service at the church.  
Arrangements by Lake Funeral Home in Ionia.  Memorial gifts may be made to the 
First Presbyterian Church of Ionia or to the Ionia County Memorial Hospital.
