The Ionia Standard, Friday, July 24, 1885

Thomas Bond of Easton one of the pioneers of Ionia county, died on Monday.  
Mr. Bond was pilot on the first steamer that run on Grand river above Grand 
Rapids, the Humming Bird.  Previous to that he ran a pole boat between Grand 
Rapids and up river points, carrying supplies to the settlers.  He came to 
Ionia about 1840, and after the D. & M. railway was built, he settled on a 
farm in Easton.  He was highly respected and well liked by his neighbors and 
died full of years and honors.
