In Memoriam – Winslow P. Burhans.

Died – At his home in Ionia on Saturday evening Nov. 7th, after an illness of
only a few hours, Winslow P. Burhans, in the 65th years of his age.

Winslow P. Burhans was born in Greene county N.Y., in May 1821.  In 1848 he
removed to Oneida in the same state and there engaged in mercantile business. 
From thence in 1851, he went to the northern part of the state where he was for
a time part proprietor of a tannery.  In 1855 he removed to the west in search
of a business opening, and after a sojourn at Chicago and Milwaukee, he finally,
in 1859 settled down in Ionia when he engaged in banking and brokerage, and
where he continued to reside until his death, last Saturday evening, Nov. 7, at
7:15 o’clock.

Mr. Burhans had thus been a citizen of this place for about 26 years, during
which time he bore an active and prominent part in business and church circles.
 He was for some years associated with Messrs Wellington Page & B. Babcock of
this city, and subsequently he became interested in the organization of the
Second national bank of which he was vice president at the time of his death. 
He was noted for his skill as a financier and for his punctuality and exactness
in all his dealings.  His diligence and faithfulness in business was rewarded
with the accumulation of a large property.

Mr. Burhans became a member of the First Presbyterian church soon after his
removal to this place and for many years he served as trustee of the society.

He was united in marriage to Rachel A. Dorman, July 29, 1857, at Syracuse, N.Y.,
who still survives him.  Their union was blessed with three children, Hannah D.,
the wife of Willis VanDeventer of Cheyenne, Wyoming Winslow P. who died Feb. 2,
1870, aged 3 years and 6 months and Winslow P., born subsequently to the latter,
and who still lives.

For some years past Mr. Burhans had been in a very delicate state of health. 
Last winter he sought relief in a change of climate, spending most of the time
in Colorado and Wyoming; and he was expecting to make a similar change during
the coming winter.  Whilst none of his friends looked for the complete
restoration of his health none realized that his end was so near.

 As a man, Mr. Burhans was courteous, polite, friendly and marked by freedom
from censoriousness and malice.  As a husband, he was attentive, thoughtful and
devoted.  As a father, he was kind and indulgent.  

His sudden death was a great shock to the entire community, and has called forth
warm expressions of sympathy for the bereaved widow and family from every quarter.
