Drowned.

Donald Campbell, of Portland, Meets Death in Grand River.

Portland, May 10. – Donald Campbell, a prominent citizen of this place, was 
accidentally drowned this morning, while at work on a dam across Grand River.  
Campbell together with C. J. Warren and H. S. Soules were in a boat, which was 
held in position in the current above the dam by a rope stretched across the 
river.  This rope broke under the heavy strain, and the boat and the three men 
were carried over the dam.  Campbell was drowned, his body being recovered 
about a mile below the village.  Warren and Soules clung to the boat, and were 
rescued.

It is thought Campbell was killed or stunned at the dam by striking his head 
against a timber or stone, as he floated down the river face downward, and 
there is a contusion on the forehead showing where the blow may have been 
received.

Mr. Campbell was one of our most worthy and popular citizens, and the event has 
cast a feeling of gloom over the village.  He was a member of the village board 
of trustees, and was one of the proprietors of the Portland planning mill.  He 
leaves a wife, and a daughter 12 or 13 years old.
