Dean Is Victim of Brief Illness; Funeral Thursday Mrs. Alice J. Dean, 83, widow of Oscar H. Dean, well known and highly respected resident of this city, passed away at her home, 321 East Main street, Sunday morning, following a brief illness. She had been a life-long resident of this county, being the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ethan Johnson, early settlers here. The funeral was held on Thursday afternoon from the late home with Rev. Thomas Leroy Parker in charge. She had been a devout member of the St. Johns Episcopal church. Interment was made in Highland Park cemetery. She received her elementary education in the Ionia Public schools and upon completion of her course was sent to Lockport, New York, where she took a finishing course in a private seminary for young women, after which she returned home and was united in marriage to Mr. Dean, two days before Christmas, December 23, 1862. The passing of Mrs. Dean is a distinct loss to the community as she was one of the most kindly, cheerful and helpful women of the city. Her husband for a long period of years was a member of the grocery firm of Dean & Eyester on East Main street. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Marion Faulkner of California and Mrs. Celia Miller of Detroit.
