DOUGHERTY, JOHN R.:

   Obit:  IONIA DAILY SENTINEL, MI, THURSDAY, JUNE 2, 1910, front page:  "JOHN
R. DOUGHERTY DEAD.  Lyons Farmer and Banker Joins the Great Majority.  John R.
Dougherty, many years banker, farmer and very prominent citizen of Lyons
township, succumbed to the ravages of the grim reaper, after an illness which
confined him to the house only three weeks, at the farm home, south of Lyons, on
Wednesday afternoon, aged 68 years.
   Deceased was the son of James and Sarah (Loomis) Dougherty, and was born in
Cayuga county, New York, on Dec. 17, 1842.
   His father was a native of Ireland, and came, alone, to the United States at
the age of 14 years.
   Mr. Dougherty came to Michigan with his mother in 1857, and located on a farm
near Lyons.  He remained at home until he was 20 years old, supporting his
mother by working on a farm during the summers, and atteded school winters.  The
mother died on July 19, 1876.
   Mr. Dougherty enlisted in the Eighth Michigan Infantry, and served his
country three years.  He was with Burnside in all his campaigns, and took a
valiant part in the seige of Knoxville, Tenn., the battles of South Mountain,
Antietam, etc., and was promoted in May, 1865, to first lieutenant.
   For one year after "coming home from the war," he worked by the month on a
farm, and then engaged in the grocery and provision business in Lyons---this was
in 1867.  In 1868 he purchased an unimproved farm, which is now one of the
finest in the township, and has been a source of much pride to its owner.  In
1862 he married Melissa J. Truesdell of Broome county, New York, who preceded
him to the better land.   His second wife was Mrs. Lois Dunn, many years a
resident of Ionia.
   Deceased was in the truest and best sense a self-made man, industrious and
above reproach as to personal honor.  He was best known, perhaps, as the senior
member of the Lyons banking house of John R. Dougherty & Co., while at the same
time being the senior member of the merchantile firm of Dougherty & Gleason of
Lyons.  By his thrift he won his way from a position of dependence to one of
independence.
   Time of funeral had not been fixed at 2 this afternoon, awaiting word from
relatives residing at a distance, but will probably be attended on Saturday."

   IONIA DAILY SENTINEL, MI, June 3, 1910:  "BRIEF MENTION column - The funeral
of John R. Dougherty will be attended at the M. E. church in Lyons on Saturday
afternoon at 2 o'clock."   

   THE LYONS HERALD, MI, June 2, 1910 - John R. Dougherty Died Wednesday.  In
the passing of John R. Dougherty this community loses one of its best citizens,
one whose name has always stood for honesty and square dealing.  He died at his
beautiful farm home, just south of the village, Wednesday, June 1, after an
illness of two weeks.
   Deceased was born in Cayuga county, N.Y., December 17, 1842, and came to
Michigan in 1857, locating near Lyons.  He remained at home until he was 20
years old, supporting his mother by working on a farm summers and attending
school winters.  In August, 1862, he enlisted in the Eighth Michigan infantry
and served his country three years, with honor and distinction.  He was with
Burnside in all his campaigns and took part in the siege of Knoxville, the
battles of South Mountain and Antietam, Fredericksburg, Blue Springs, etc.  In
1865 he was promoted to first lieutenant.
   On his return from the war he engaged in the mercantile business in Lyons and
for many years was associated with Frank T. Gleason.  In 1868 he purchased his
present farm, then in a state of nature, and the pride and delight of his life
has been to make it "blossom like the rose."
   The reputation of deceased for honesty and integrity was so well established
in the community that when the private banking firm was organized, the name of
John R. Dougherty & Co. was chosen and for years it stood as the leading
financial institution of this part of the country.
   Mr. Dougherty was a man of strong convictions and was ever outspoken in his
opinions.  He was of a generous disposition and in a quiet, unassuming manner
aided many worthy enterprises and persons.  In fact his life was full of acts of
practical charity that the world knew nothing of, and his memory will long be
cherished by those into whose lives he came in closest touch.
   He is survived by his wife and numerous relatives."

   THE LYONS HERALD, MI, June 9, 1910 - Card of Thanks .  To all who so kindly
assissted us during the illness and burial of Mr. Dougherty, and for the many
expressions of sympathy, we tender our sincere thanks.  Mrs. J. R. Dougherty and
relatives."
