OLD VETERAN GONE
Rufus Goddard Passed Away Friday Morning

Rufus Goddard died at his home on Sixth Ave., Friday morning after a long 
illness of consumption.

Mr.Goddard, youngest of four children-two girls and two boys-was born August 11, 
1832 in Livingston Co.N.Y., his mother living only a few weeks after his 
birth.His father was afterward married again and in the fall of '38 the family 
moved to Rome, Lenawee Co, in this state. In November 1844 the father brought 
the family to Sebewa township whee the deceased lived until last May when he 
moved to this place.

He took active part in the clearing away of the dense forests that once covered 
Sebewa and was considered one of the pioneers.He served three years in the Civil 
War, enlisting first in August of 61 in Co.13, 16th Michigan Infantry. He was 
discharged for disability in August of the following year, and re-enlisted in 
1863 in Co.K., 10th Michigan Volunteer Calvary where he served faithfully to the 
end of the war, being discharged Nov. 22, 1865. On Dec.18, 1869, he was married 
to Martha M.Wolcott and to this union was born two children, Lois and Ida E., 
the latter now Mrs.Chas. Stregmann of Sebewa. Besides the wife and two daughters 
he leaves a brother D.W. Goddard of Lansing and a sister,Mrs.Lucy Poucher of 
Lenawee Co., this state.

During the war, Mr.Goddard suffered from, an attack of measles which a physical 
weakness fro which he never fully recovered. A naturally strong constitution 
enabled him to pass his three score and ten despite the ailment from which he 
suffered so long. Consumption at last claimed him as a victim. He was a very 
patient sufferer in his illness, ever thoughtful of those who ministered to him.
He was ready for the summons and went to his rest like a child falling asleep in 
it's mothers arms,

He was a good soldier, a respected citizen, a kind indulgent husband and father, 
and his loss will be keenly felt.

The service was held at theM.E. church Sunday afternoon and was largely 
attended.Rev. Wilcox had charge of the ceremony and the remains were laid to 
rest in Lakeside Cemetery.
