The Ionia Sentinel, Thursday, February 15, 1883
Hiram Hall, an old resident of Orleans, died on the 3d inst., after a painful 
illness of six months.  He was born in Vermont in 1809.  While a mere lad he 
came to Michigan with his father and brother in 1821.  In the fall of 1823 the 
father left the two boys, Hiram and Ebnezer, at Ypsilanti, and went to Ohio, 
where he remained until spring.  The winter supply of provisions left with the 
boys, who were only 12 and 14 years old, consisted of a bushel of potatoes and 
a peck of corn, but by fishing and hunting the kept their larder pretty well 
supplied.  They were the first whites who wintered on the Huron at Ypsilanti.  
Hiram was married when 21 to Julia A. Olmstead, a young lady of 16.  They 
removed to Orleans in 1846, where they have ever since resided.  Mrs. Hall is 
still living.  Ebenezer died in Orleans about ten years ago.
