Melissa C. Haas, age 97, of Ionia, passed away on Sunday, October 24, 2004.  
She was born on March 3, 1907 in Orange Township, the daughter of Freeman and 
Eliza (Wheelock) Thorpe.  Mrs. Haas attended the Ionia schools, and later 
worked as a seamstress at General Motors in Ionia and Lansing.  Melissa also 
worked at A.C. Spark Plug in Ionia.

She married Wilton Youngs in 1927 and he preceded her in death in 1962; she 
later married Roy Haas in 1966, and he preceded her in death in 1980; Mrs. Haas 
was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, three sisters.  
Surviving are two daughters, Marilyn McMahon of Ionia and Sharon (Evan) Kisela 
of Sheridan; two step sons, Donald (Sandy) Haas of Clifford Lake and William 
(Barbara) Haas of VA; two step daughters, Patricia Bradley and Nancy Meade, 
both of Ionia; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-
grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Harger, Pastor of 
Shiloh Community Church at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the Saranac Cemetery.  A 
funeral luncheon will follow at the Saranac Community Church, located at 125 
Bridge Street, Saranac.  For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made 
to the I.C.M.H. – Home Care Nurses, in memory of Mrs. Melissa C. Haas.  
Arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Ionia.
