George Hoppough, brother of Sheriff Mark Hoppough and a pioneer resident of 
Smyrna, died at Kalamazoo Tuesday.  He was for many years postmaster at Smyrna 
and although an uncompromising Republican in politics, served his people and 
administrations of his own and different views faithfully and well and though 
old age had enfeebled him and he could not ask for more time, there are very 
few who will hear of the death of George Hoppough without expressing regret at 
the passing of a grand and good citizen.  

His funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the old home in 
Smyrna, where he had lived so long and will be under the auspices of the 
Masonic order of this city.  All masons are requested to attend the funeral.

George Hoppough came with his parents to Otisco township in the spring of 
1861, being the third of a family of ten children.  They purchased what was 
then known as the Moe farm, which, with the change of ownership soon became 
known as the Hoppough farm.  He remained on the farm for some years, then was 
married to Eva L. Brink, and came to Smyrna to engage in the drug and 
mercantile business.

He was a charter member of the Belding lodge F. & A. M. of which he was still 
a member.  He was one of the first directors of the Peoples Savings bank of 
Belding, retaining his directorship until recently.  He was appointed 
Postmaster by President Grant, and held the office constantly for more than 42 
years, until he sold out the drug and store business and retired after his 
years of active work.  He was a generous giver of his means to every good work 
that was beneficial to the community.  He was for many years a member of the 
Smyrna school board and supervisor and treasurer of his township.  He was 
often a delegate to the Republican county and state conventions, thus being an 
all-round efficient and worthy American citizen.

Retiring from active business, his health became impaired and has gradually 
been failing, until he passed away on the evening of May 9th at the age of 76 
years, 4 months and 26 days.

He was a loving husband, an a very indulgent father.  He leaves his widow and 
three children to mourn their loss.  Their children are Cora L. Hoppough, now 
music director of Olivet College; Carl N. Hoppough, a salesman at Grand 
Rapids; and Captain Clayton I. Hoppough, of the Word war, now in the U. S. 
Radio service.

During the past two years Mr. and Mrs. Hoppough and their son, Carl, have been 
together, residents of Grand Rapids.  Interment was in the old home cemetery 
at Smyrna, Friday afternoon.
