          LEROY HUMMEL JR. DIED THURSDAY
   Funeral services for LeRoy Hummel Jr. 19 of Vermontville were held Saturday at
the First Methodist Church 
with burial in Lakeside cemetery, Lake Odessa.
   The son of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Hummel was critically injured in a diving accident
during a church picnic on 
Sunday evening passed away at Hayes-Green-Beach Hospital, Charlotte Thursday.  He
had suffered a 
fractured neck and had undergone surgery on Monday.
   He was salutatorian of the 1955 graduating class of Vermontville high school and
was active in school 
affairs and had won letters in football, baseball, basketball and track.  He was
assistant manager of the 
football team at Northern Michigan College at Marquette where he attended last year
after graduation as he 
had suffered an injury which prevented him from making the team.  He had worked on a
construction crew 
this summer to earn money for his college expenses this year.
   Besides his parents he is survived by two brothers, Dewey and Donald at home and
maternal grandparents.
