Muir; Sept. 18 – G.S. Linderman was found dead in bed this morning by J.O. 
Probasco and J.D. Anderson, who investigated from the fact that people had 
begun to suspect something wrong, because Linderman had not been seen for two 
or three days.  Linderman lived alone.  He was an eccentric character, about 75 
years old.  He usually slept down stairs, but Probasco and Anderson found house 
locked, and could see no one through lower windows, so they procured a ladder, 
and looking in upper window, saw Linderman on bed dead.  Remains bloated and 
considerably decomposed, and repulsive in the extreme.

It is thought deceased starved to death, and that his decease occurred 
Wednesday night.  It is supposed he changed his sleeping room on account of the 
extreme heat.

At first foul play was suspected; but nothing in house was disturbed, and there 
was considerable money in house, $20 being found in the clothing which hung in 
the room where remains were found.

The house was crowded this morning by people who wished to see remains.  
Justice Bennett impaneled a jury, which adjourned until afternoon.

Deceased had lived in Muir about three years, coming here from Grand Rapids.  
He owned a dwelling in town and a farm just north, and was well-to-do, but 
exceedingly “close.”  The doctor, who had attended him, said that the most he 
needed was good food, but all the physician’s efforts could not induce him to 
get it.  His system was not in good condition, owing to lack of proper 
nutriment.

His only relative is a son living at Eau Claire, Wis., who was telegraphed.  
Undertaker Shaw took charge of remains, which are to be buried this afternoon, 
it being manifestly impossible to keep them longer, waiting arrival of son.

An old man named G.S. Lindeman was found dead in his bed at Muir last Saturday 
morning.  He lived alone and it is thought he had been dead a couple of days at 
least.  He was possessed of considerable means, but when taken sick refused to 
incur the expense of having either a housekeeper or nurse.  He lived in what is 
known as the J.E. Just homestead.

The people of Muir were very much surprised last Saturday morning to hear of 
the death of G.S. Linderman.  Undertaker Shaw took charge of the remains, which 
were placed in a sealed casket, and by direction from Linderman’s son, taken to 
Grand Rapids.  The son is still in Muir, looking after the interests of the 
estate.
