The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Friday, November 8, 1968
Monroe MacPherson Sr., 61, of route 3, Easton township, long time Ionia 
businessman, died Thursday evening about 8:30 of a heart attack en route to a 
Lake City doctor’s office.  He was dead on arrival at the office.  He was on a 
bow and arrow hunting trip accompanied by Dr. L. J. Thomson and others.

He was born in Easton township, December 12, 1906 the son of William and 
Minnie Young MacPherson.  He was a member of the Zion United Methodist church, 
trustee of the church and president of the Bethany class and member of the 
men’s organization of the church.  He was a graduate of Ionia high school in 
1924 where he held several track records.  He also attended Augerbright 
Business college of Battle Creek. 

In 1932 he established a chicken hatchery business and in 1953 organized radio 
station WION in Ionia and in 1965 purchased WYON-FM in Grand Rapids.  He is a 
member of Michigan Hatchery association, National Hatchery association and was 
an avid sportsman.  

He is survived by his wife Lucille, a son Monroe MacPherson Jr., three 
grandchildren.  

He will be at Stone-Kauffman funeral home until noon Monday when he will be 
taken to Zion United Methodist church were services will be conducted at 2 
p.m.  Rev. Chester J. Erickson, assisted by Rev. John Price of Carlton, will 
officiate and interment will be at Easton cemetery.  A memorial has been 
established for the church.

Rev. Chester J. Erickson and Rev. John Price officiated at funeral services at 
Zion United Methodist church Monday afternoon for J. Monroe MacPherson who 
died Thursday.  Organist was Mrs. Royce Waters and vocalist, Mrs. George 
Seidelman.  Interment was at Easton cemetery.  Bearers were Bruce and Gene 
McPherson, Jack, Gerald, Norris and Ralph Horrocks.  Seated in groups were 
employees of the MacPherson Hatchery, WION-WYON radio station, and Bethany 
class of Zion United Methodist church.

Norton Avery, Mrs. Darwin Henricks, Mrs. Oscar Nummer, Mrs. Bernard Nummer, 
Nelson Nummer, of Lowell; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Fennel of Flint; Mr. and Mrs. Al
