As a result of a collision between a Ford car, driven by Miss Ala Moore, and 
occupied by her mother, Mrs. Clyde Moore, her great aunt, Mrs. Angie Moore and 
Mrs. Mary Barnes and daughter, Miss Ruth Barnes, and a large Reo touring car, 
driven by Joe Leslie and used by him for carrying passengers between Ionia and 
Lansing, Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. Angie Moore is dead and Mrs. Mary Barnes is 
lying at a hospital in Lansing with little hopes out for her recovery, as 
reports coming from the hospital this morning stated that aside from a broken 
pelvis bone she was suffering internal injuries which was almost certain to 
cause her death.

Aside from a badly cut hand, sustained by the driver of the Lansing-Ionia bus, 
the several occupants of that machine all escaped with a bad shaking up.

The accident occurred Tuesday afternoon about 2:30 o’clock at the intersection 
of M-16 and what is known as the Tyler road, at the Steel School house.  The 
party of five ladies left Portland for Ionia, where Mrs. Angie Moore was to do 
some shopping preparatory to her annual trip to the northern part of the state 
to escape the hay fever season as she was a great sufferer from that disease.  
The route taken was by way of Campbell’s corners, coming onto M-16 at the 
Steel school, the party intending to cross the state trunk line at the place 
and go west to the Bellevue road, escaping the heavy traffic.  As they were 
crossing the main road the bus was coming up the hill, going toward Ionia and 
struck the car containing the ladies fairly between the fenders, both machines 
toppling over, the Ford pinning his occupants beneath.  Other motorists came 
to their assistance and after righting the car found Mrs. Moore lying dead in 
a pool of blood with her head badly crushed.

Mrs. Clyde Moore and Miss Ala were brought to Portland where they were found 
to be suffering from severe bodily bruises, although nothing serious is 
expected to result.  Mrs. Barnes and daughter, Ruth, were taken to Ionia where 
an examination found Mrs. Barnes to be suffering from a broken pelvis bone and 
internal injuries.  She was later taken to a Lansing hospital.  Miss Ruth 
received severe external injuries of a painful nature.

It is said that natural conditions at this corner are ideal for an accident.  
The trunk line from the south dips down into a hollow just before the corner 
is reached and the view of a driver coming north is obstructed by the hill and 
banks on the Tyler road to such an extent that a car approaching on the cross 
road is not visible until the corner is reached.  This is also true of a car 
going west on the Tyler road.  Shortly after the accident Coroner Boynton, of 
Ionia, empanelled a jury, but up to the time of going to press was still 
proceeding with his investigations.  The jury will be called together at a 
date yet to be set to hear the evidence in the matter and future action will 
depend upon the verdict of the coroner’s jury.

Mrs. Angie Moore was born in Allen county, Indiana, and came to this vicinity 
with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Coral Taylor, when a small girl.  In 1869, she 
was married to Perry N. Moore, who passed away April 16, 1904, since which 
time she had made her home with her nephew, Clyde A. Moore.  She is survived 
by one brother, E. W. Taylor, of Sunfield.  She was a member of Portland lodge 
of Rebekahs, being the last surviving charter member of that lodge.  She was 
also a member of the O. E. C. and a faithful member of the Congregational 
Church.

The funeral will be held from the Moore residence at 10:30 o’clock, Saturday 
forenoon, in charge of Rev. C. E. Taggart.  Burial will be made in the 
Portland Cemetery.
