The Hastings Reminder, May, 2014


Ronald E. Near, of Hastings, passed away May 28, 2014.  Ron was born June 6, 
1919 in Ionia County, the son of Earl and Erma (Stadel) Near.   

Ron served his country in the United States Army as Military Police in Brazil 
during World War II.  On February 22, 1947, in Kalamazoo; Ron married the 
former Ruth H. Gilger and she preceded him in death on November 5, 2010. 

Ron farmed in the Kalamazoo and the Prairieville area until moving to Coeur 
d’Alene, Idaho in 1972, where he worked as a heavy equipment operator for Port 
Falls Highway District, retiring in 1981.  Ron returned to Michigan and lived 
in the Prairieville, Freeport, and Bellevue areas. 

Ron is survived by his daughters: Karen Lee (Richard) Paulson, Brenda Sue 
(Owen) Oehrling, Terri Lynn (Daniel) Eastwood, a brother: Owen, six 
grandchildren, several great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  Ron 
was also preceded in death by his parents, a still born daughter on July 10, 
1956, and brothers: Eldon, Gaylord, Howard, and Gerald. 

A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, May 31, 2014, at 10 a.m. at 
Prairieville Cemetery, Reverend Brad Gardner officiating.  Memorial 
contributions to Wounded Warrior Project will be appreciated.  Beeler-Gores 
Funeral Home, Middleville, Michigan.
