JASON PEACOCK DIED THURSDAY

Jason E. Peacock, 91, retired business man and public official, passes away 
Thursday afternoon at Kalamazoo, after several years of ill health.

In his early life he was a school teacher for 13 years, teaching in Michigan 
and Kansas schools. He operated a grocery store for 25 years closing out the 
merchandise in 1936. He owned and operated farms in Odessa, Campbell and Sebewa 
townships and enjoyed working in the soil as after retirement he planted many 
evergreen seedlings, fruit trees, strawberries and other plants on land here in 
the village he owned and spent much time in working these gardens. 

It was largely through his efforts that the Chautauqua, a summer type of 
entertainment was brought to the village. He loved books and music and American 
history was one of his hobbies. His family records date back to early history 
of the country and he kept up a large correspondence with his family although 
scattered throughout the country, until his health failed about three years ago.

A member of the Congregational Church for many years; he served in various 
offices of the church and Sunday School including deacon, trustees, 
superintendent of the Sunday School ad Sunday school teacher for more than 20 
years. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Grover (Beryl) Cook of St. Joseph; a 
granddaughter, Mrs. Maxwell Freeman of Niles and a great granddaughter, one 
sister, Mrs. Anna Steiner, Sheridan, Montana, nieces and nephews. His wife, the 
former Mable Walker passed away, June 27, 1954, and a son, Sheldon was fatally 
injured in a car accident, September 28, 1924.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Pickens funeral chapel with 
burial in lakeside cemetery. Rev. A.J. Pitman officiated.
